What Is Botox?

Botox is used to treat forehead wrinkles, smile and squint lines, frown lines, and lines around the eyes known as crow’s feet. Botox is a liquid that is injected into the treatable areas relaxing the underlying muscles.

Over the last 20 years Botox has treated thousands of patients cosmetically and medically. Botox is a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum and is manufactured by the company Allergan.

How long will Botox last once injected?
Most Botox injections last from three to six months. Typically you will have the Botox treatment 3-4 times in the first year and 2-3 times each year after that. Once the muscles have been relaxed for a while it will take less Botox injections to maintain the relaxation. Each patient responds differently so results may vary.

Once the Botox is injected how long does it take to work?
Sometimes the results can been seen in as little as 72 hours but typically it will take 6-7 days to see the full effect. Many doctors will have you return after your first treatment so they check your response to the Botox. In many cases the first round of Botox may only show a partial response. This is very common and you may not see complete results until after the second or third injection.

Is Botox expensive and will my insurance cover it?
The price of Botox injections can vary from city to city. Where there is higher cost of living like Los Angeles or New York the treatment can be more expensive. An example of cost for treating frown lines for a women would be anywhere from $300 – $500 and men who have larger facial muscles could cost between $400 – $600. And remember treating more areas is going to increase the price. Most insurance companies will not cover the cost of Botox injections since it is considered a cosmetic treatment.
